Detail
To promote stamp collecting and to proliferate philatelic culture, Korea Post has annually designated the “Philately Week” while concurrently holding the Korea Philatelic Exhibition during that week. This year, the Korea Philatelic Exhibition will be held from August 7 to August 11, at Pacific Hall, COEX, under the theme of “An Uncommon Joy in One’s Life.” The 2008 Korea Philatelic Exhibition will display 500 outstanding frames of stamp exhibits and also operate “the Hall commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Founding of the Republic of Korea” in order to hark back on our history through stamps and photographs in this meaningful year that commemorates the 60th anniversary of the Founding of the Republic of Korea. In the “PHILAKOREA 2009 Promotion Room,” there will be various events involving endearing mascots such as “Woorirang -- the Letter Boy” and “Hanarang ? the Stamp Girl.” In the “Energy Experience Room,” the value of energy and the need for energy conservation can be learned through useful stories and interesting experiences. In addition, a cultural activities zone will be operated where not only stamp collectors but also all visitors can experience an enjoyable and learning encounter through stamps. This cultural activities zone will comprise of the “Learning About Robot Room” where visitors can interact with intelligent robots such as a dancing puppy robot, “Stamp & Letter-Writing Culture Room,” “My Own Stamp Room,” etc. This year’s special stamp issued to commemorate Philately Week takes the form of a “stamp in a stamp,” as it did last year. The stamps introduced as “stamp in a stamp” are the “commemorative stamp to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Emperor Kojong’s enthronement” ? Korea’s first commemorative stamp issued in 1902, and the “overprint definitive stamp (14 Won, Cheomseongdae)” issued in 1951. This special stamp will be a photochromic stamp that reacts to ultraviolet light: such items in the stamp as ‘3’, ‘三?’, ‘300원’ and ‘(Korean Flag)’, which normally have no color, will change into the color of red, when they are exposed to direct sunlight.
