The 18th FINA World Championships Gwangju 2019, an international festival for aquatic athletes and fans around the world, will be held in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Yeosu City from July 12, 2019. The FINA World Championships, in which athletes compete for world ranking points in aquatics events such as swimming, is one of the five biggest international athletics competitions, together with the Summer Olympics, the Winter Olympics, the World Cup, and the IAAF World Championships. Since its inception in 1973 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, the FINA World Championships have been held every two years by FINA, the International Swimming Federation, and will be held in Korea for the first time. The 2019 Championships are expected to be the biggest event ever, as 15,000 athletes, officials, and media personnel from a record-breaking 195 countries will come together. A total of 76 medal events will be held across 6 disciplines: diving, high diving, open water, swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo. It is evident that all of the competitions will be especially fierce this year as 43% of the spots available for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have been allocated to the Championships. With the successful hosting of the Championships, Korea will become the 4th country in the world to have hosted all five major international sports events, after Germany, Italy, and Japan. The slogan of the Championships Dive into Peace was developed with the hope of attaining peace for all of humanity and has particular resonance for Gwangju, a city that symbolizes democracy and human rights. The logo of the Championships was created based on the image of Mt. Mudeungsan (warm embrace) and Yeongsangang River (breath of life) and represents moving forward towards a dream while riding a wave of peace. The mascots, Suri and Dari, are a personified couple of otters, a designated natural monument (no. 330) with their habitats situated around Mt. Mudeungsan and Yeongsangang River.
