Being a peninsula with water on three sides, Korea has plenty of scenic beaches to boast about. For our fifth collection of Must-visit Tourist Destinations for Koreans, Korea Post chose some of the best beaches in Korea. Jeongdongjin Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon Province has a coastal terrace that is estimated to have been formed 2 to 2.5 million years ago and has been designated as Natural Monument (No. 437). Jeongdongjin Station is listed in the Guinness World Records as the train station that is closest to the ocean. A popular TV location, the station is a must-visit place for the fans of Korean dramas. Kkotji Beach in Taean, South Chungcheong Province is a place where a 3.2 kilometers long white sandy beach creates beautiful harmony with a lush pine tree forest. The shallow, clear water of the beach recedes at low tide, exposing the rocks among which shoreline critters such as clams, crabs, and sea anemone can be found. On the right side of the shore stand famous rocks named Halmibawi (grandma rock) and Halabibawi (grandpa rock) that have a sad legend, and the view as the sun sets behind these rocks is an unforgettable sight. Songho Beach in Haenam, South Jeolla Province is the perfect destination for families as it offers a surrounding pine forest and gentle waves. The soft white sandy beach is 1.5 kilometers long. The pine tree forest that extends for about a kilometer is loved by camping enthusiasts. You can relax your mind and body in the black pine forest in Songho-ri, Haenam (South Jeolla Provinces Natural Monument No. 142) that houses around 600 pine trees, with some known to be more than 200 years old. Chaeseokgang (North Jeolla Provinces Natural Monument No. 28) in Buan, North Jeolla Province is part of Byeonsan Peninsula National Park. The cliffs with eroded sedimentary rocks resemble thousands of books piled on top of one another. During low tide that occurs twice a day, visitors can observe a variety of marine creatures and sea caves. You can catch a spectacular view of a sunset from the sea caves at ebb tide.
