Children`s Day is a commemorative day observed by many countries to promote children`s rights and happiness. Children`s Day in Korea was first celebrated in May 1, 1923, led by children`s rights activist Bang Jeonghwan. Korea Post is issuing the commemorative stamp series 100th Celebration of Children`s Day in celebration of the centennial in 2022. Children at the time lacked social protection and were usually called using pejorative term that belittled them. However, Bang believed that children should be treated with dignity and respect, and strove to spread the word “eorini,” meaning “children,” instead of other pejorative terms. In 1923, he founded the first-ever children`s cultural movement organization called Saekdonghoe (Saekdong Organization) in Korea and published the children’s magazine Eorini, leading the advocacy for children. Saekdonghoe declared Children’s Day on May 1, 1923 with the intent that “children should be treated with great admiration and enjoy happiness for at least one day in a year.” Thus, Children’s Day was born in commemoration of Bang’s wish to create a world of happy children. Historically, Children’s Day had been celebrated on the first Sunday of May since 1927, and has been celebrated on its currently fixed date of May 5, which was the first Sunday of May in 1946 following Korea`s national independence. Children`s Day is meaningful as it encourages children to grow happily with confidence, contributing to raising public awareness of children’s welfare. This commemorative stamp depicts an image of a bird wearing a hat embracing children. It symbolizes Bang who often wore a fedora hat. It is an image of Bang taking children to a world where they are happy and protected. We hope that this commemorative stamp series serves as an opportunity to look back on the founding spirit of Children`s Day to fill children with dreams and hope.
