Detail
Blood donation is a priceless act of giving blood to give life. It is also the only way to save people suffering from excessive bleeding or rare diseases as blood cannot be made with technology. In celebration of World Blood Donor Day on June 14, Korea Post is issuing the commemorative stamp Charitable Blood Donation to promote the importance of constantly giving blood. The prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has created difficulties in supplying blood, also impacting blood stocks in Korea. The central and local governments as well as private companies have been participating in blood donation campaigns to overcome blood shortage, but it still does not meet the demands of medical institutions. Packed red blood cells and platelets from donated blood can be stored for a maximum of 35 days and 5 days, respectively, and long-term storage of blood is impossible. Therefore, constant blood donation is necessary to maintain a certain amount of blood in stock. Blood donation is the only way to save someone`s life, and also a way to become healthier. Blood donors can check their overall health conditions by running tests on levels of hemoglobin, white blood cells, and platelets, as well as liver functions before drawing blood, and also benefit from improved blood circulation and treatment of inflammations. Giving blood is as easy as visiting your nearest blood bank with your ID, getting your blood pressure checked, and filling out a simple health questionnaire. Anyone with a healthy body is eligible to give blood, so take this opportunity to visit your local blood bank. Emergency surgeries due to car accidents and complicated surgeries such as organ transplantation are decided depending on blood stocks, so maintaining a certain amount of blood is most essential. Blood donation is the key to showing care in this time when blood supply is unstable than ever. The commemorative stamp depicts two cute, healthy characters giving blood. We hope this commemorative stamp serves as an opportunity for everyone to recognize the importance of blood donation and take part in giving blood like the characters featured on the stamp to overcome the national blood shortage we are facing.
