Detail
In 1860, Donghak was founded, advocating for human equality and opposing foreign influence, and it spread widely. However, the government and the yangban class (ruling class) viewed it as a threat and suppressed their activities. In the spring of 1894, peasants who could not endure the oppression and plundering by local government officials rose in a large-scale rebellion under the leadership of Jeon Bongjun. The Donghak Peasant Revolution began with the first uprising in March 1894 (lunar calendar) for systemic reform, followed by a second uprising in September of the same year to defend national sovereignty against Japanese aggression, marking a significant large-scale people`s uprising. April 7, 1894 (May 11 in the solar calendar) marked the day the Donghak Peasant Army, led by Jeon Bongjun, Son Hwajung, and Kim Gaenam, achieved its first major victory by defeating the government army in the Hwangtohyeon battlefield. As news of this victory spread throughout the country, more peasants joined the Donghak, significantly boosting the revolutionary fervor of the peasant army. In honor of this pivotal victory, which marked a turning point in the Donghak Peasant Revolution, Donghak Peasant Revolution Day (May 11) was established, and this year marks the 130th anniversary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. The Records of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, consisting of 185 records, were recognized globally as a result of the Korean people`s efforts to uphold the universal values of freedom, equality, and human rights and were inscribed as a UNESCO Memory of the World in 2023. The Donghak Peasant Revolution, which aimed for reform, profoundly influenced subsequent movements such as the Righteous Armies, the March 1st Movement, and the armed anti-Japanese struggle, being evaluated as a practical movement that pursued an equal society and national independence. The Donghak Peasant Army Yu Gwanghwa`s Letter featured on the commemorative stamp is one of the records of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, a letter written in Chinese characters by Yu Gwanghwa to his younger brother in November 1894, vividly depicting the determination of the Donghak Peasant Army who participated in the battle and the situation they faced. Yu Gwanghwa`s Letter is evaluated as an important record revealing the participation of people from all walks of life in the Donghak Peasant Revolution, as Yu Gwanghwa is the son of a noble family from Naju. As you see the commemorative stamp featuring the sculpture `Immortality, Path of Wind,` expressing the progressive spirit of General Jeon Bongjun and the Donghak Peasant Army, may it serve as a reminder of the noble spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, which paved the way for egalitarianism and democracy today.
